Art Deco....a timeless artistic and design style. The echoes of this century-old vision influenced a century of design and continue to resonate today throughout our culture. The roots of Art Deco can be traced to Paris in the early 20th century. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture, painting, graphic arts and film. In the early 20th century, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. Surviving American examples are now part of the identities and allure of Miami Beach, Los Angeles, and New York City. Miami Beach contains the largest collection of deco architecture. New York City's Empire State Building and Chrysler Building are two of the largest and best-known examples of the style and dominate the skyline for all to see. 1. "Echoes In Deco" sets the multicultural tone using multiple meters building into a strong iconic fanfare statement. The energy of south Florida is captured in the salsa rhythms and flowing melodic lines that follow. 2. "Beautiful Sophia" draws upon the elegance and grace of Latin American ballroom dance that is not only thriving but enjoying a resurgence of popularity throughout the United States. 3. "Danza Cubano" celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Miami's Cuban-American culture. Soaring lines over driving and complex Cuban rhythms give way to the classic elegance of a European fugue. The Cuban influence returns leading to an energetic and powerful conclusion. Composed for the Fayette County High School Band under the direction of Dr. Myra Rhoden, "Echoes In Deco" was premiered in the fall of 2010. |
